Viruses are obtained from peer-to-peer file sharing, network sharing, infected websites, and many other places. Everyone eventually runs into a virus, but there are ways to prevent them from getting on your computer and/or spreading:
Antivirus Software
Installing a Antivirus program is the first thing you should do. There should be no computer without some form of virus protection. UNT provides free McAfee Antivirus software, so there are no excuses for not having protection.
To get the program, Download Here. You will have to enter your EUID and password, so have that on hand if you don't know it. Be sure to update your virus definitions every once in awhile, or else it won't be able to detect new viruses.
Preventative Measures
There are a few things you can do to decrease the likelihood of getting a virus:
- Important: Uninstall any Peer-to-Peer(P2P) files sharing software. Not only do we not allow these programs on ResNet, it is also any easy way to get many viruses on your computer.
- Don't open emails from people/companies you don't know, and definitely don't open attachments or files unless you are know exactly what it is
- Uninstall File and Printer Sharing, which is explained in the Security section of the website
